Technical kiosk setup

Advanced Device Owner setup

Use Android Device Owner mode for stronger tablet restrictions after a factory reset.

This guide is for a technical administrator who needs more control than the basic FreeKiosk setup. Device Owner mode can more completely restrict Home, Recent Apps, notifications and system settings.

Before you begin

Device Owner provisioning normally requires a newly factory-reset tablet and can erase its existing data. Back up the communication board and any other needed files first. Check the FreeKiosk documentation for the current provisioning method, because Android manufacturers and versions differ.

Plan for recovery

Before handing over the tablet, record how an authorised administrator can:

  • leave kiosk mode;
  • update LibreAAC and FreeKiosk;
  • adjust speech and volume; and
  • restore a saved communication board.

Test this recovery plan, including a restart, before relying on the tablet for everyday communication. Keep another communication method available in case the tablet is flat, damaged or unavailable.
